INTELLITOOLS INC. INTRODUCES NETWORK VERSION OF BALANCED LITERACY PROGRAM FOR EMERGING READERS

Petaluma, California, August 12, 2002 – IntelliTools®, Inc. (www.intellitools.com), for over 20 years the pioneer in learning solutions for the diverse classroom, announces the September 2002 "Back to School" release of the Network Version of its successful IntelliTools Reading: Balanced Literacy™ program. The long-anticipated network version now permits students and teachers to access the program from any supported workstation on a school’s local area network – from the classroom, a resource room, or a lab. And it permits teachers to track student progress from any workstation on the network, while eliminating the need for students to handle a CD.

IntelliTools Reading: Balanced Literacy Network Version is completely accessible to children with special needs, including physical or learning disabilities and developmental delays. It has just been nominated for the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Tibbetts Award, the prestigious national award recognizing firms, projects, organizations, and individuals judged to exemplify the very best in small business innovative research achievement.

"We are delighted to have been able to fast-track the Network Version of Balanced Literacy in response to educators’ requests," noted Lucinda Ray, Director of Curriculum Development at IntelliTools. "The program’s development was made possible by funding we received from the National Institute for Child Health & Human Development at the National Institutes of Health."

The award-winning Balanced Literacy program provides a balanced approach to early literacy instruction for Grade 1 level readers. It integrates guided reading, supported writing, and word study or phonics activities. Nine units, built around animal themes, engage students in a yearlong program that supports and supplements their classroom language arts curriculum. In addition, Balanced Literacy is correlated to NETS Standards as well as ELA Standards for selected states. The program has been researched and tested in classrooms nationally with excellent results.

Key features specific to Balanced Literacy Network Version reflect the current needs of K-6 schools and educators:

- Students can use the software from any supported Windows or Macintosh workstation connected to a local area network.
- Programs are stored on a network server, eliminating the use of a CD at each workstation.
- Records of student progress and student preferences are stored on the server, so students can use any workstation on the local area network – in the classroom, a resource room, or a lab.
- Access to the Teacher Options area of the software is password protected.
- To protect the integrity of student data, each student may only be signed in to the program on one workstation at a time.
-Student names (i.e., user names) can be created within the Balanced Literacy Network Version program, or by importing a list from another source. And student names can be changed or edited without deleting that student’s portfolio.
Balanced Literacy Network Version comes with the same companion resources available with the original stand-alone Balanced Literacy product, including:
- Nine full-color original story books (Anchor Books)
- Balanced Literacy program CD comprising a nine-month program that includes more than 400 activities and books
- Comprehensive Teacher’s Guide with day-by-day lesson plans
- ReadyMade Primary Writing CD offering 58 extension activities using IntelliTalk II®, the innovative word processing program from IntelliTools
- 46 colorful, durable overlays that support IntelliKeys users (optional)
